Departure
The Kingdom of Dahomey was one of the most powerful and sophisticated states in West African history — a centralised monarchy that ruled for over three centuries, built extraordinary palaces, maintained a legendary army of female warriors, and created some of the most remarkable art in African history. Abomey, the royal capital, is home to the UNESCO-listed Royal Palaces of Abomey — twelve palaces built by twelve kings across three centuries, each a monument to Dahomean power, artistry, and ambition.
The Amazons of Dahomey — the Agojie — were the world's only all-female professional army, elite warriors who served as the king's personal guard and frontline fighters for over 200 years. Their story, brought to global attention by the film The Woman King, is one of the most extraordinary chapters in African military history. This 8-day journey through Benin's royal heartland is one of the most historically rich experiences in West Africa. Verified local Ambassadors guide every step.
The Kingdom of Dahomey was founded in the early 17th century and reached its peak power in the 18th and 19th centuries. At its height, Dahomey controlled much of what is now southern Benin, maintaining a sophisticated bureaucracy, a standing army, and a complex system of royal succession. The kingdom was also deeply involved in the Atlantic slave trade, selling captives to European traders — a history that Benin has confronted with remarkable honesty and dignity. The Royal Palaces of Abomey were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
