or Cape Town
Ranked among the world's greatest road trips — The Garden Route stretches 300km along South Africa's breathtaking southern coastline, connecting Cape Town and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) through ancient yellowwood forests, mirror-still lagoons, dramatic mountain passes, thundering waterfalls, pristine beaches, and some of the most charming coastal towns on the African continent.
This is not just a road trip — it is a journey through 10,000 years of human history, from the San Bushmen who painted these cliffs, to the Khoi herders who grazed these shores, to the Xhosa nation whose freedom struggle shaped modern South Africa, to the Portuguese explorers who changed the world when they landed at Mossel Bay in 1488.
This fully guided 7–14 day experience combines whale watching in Hermanus, the iconic Knysna Heads and lagoon, Tsitsikamma's ancient forest and suspension bridge, Storms River gorge kayaking, the world's highest commercial bungee jump at Bloukrans, optional shark cage diving, and an optional Addo Elephant Big 7 safari extension. Travel in either direction — your choice.
The Garden Route is one of the most historically layered landscapes on Earth. The San Bushmen have lived here for at least 100,000 years — their rock art still marks the cliffs and caves of this coastline. The Khoikhoi were the first people to encounter European explorers when Bartolomeu Dias landed at Mossel Bay in 1488. The Xhosa nation of the Eastern Cape produced Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, and the leaders of South Africa's liberation. And the Cape Coloured community — born from the meeting of Khoi, San, Malay slaves, and European settlers — created a culture of extraordinary richness along this coast. Your Daylite Digital Ambassador will bring all of this to life.
