The Casamance region has a history of gentle resistance — the Diola people were among the last in Senegal to convert to Islam or Christianity, maintaining their animist traditions and sacred forest groves (bois sacrés) to this day. The Sine-Saloum Delta was home to the ancient Serer people, whose shell middens — massive mounds of oyster shells — are among the oldest human settlements in West Africa.
