Northern Yasawas
The Yasawa Island chain stretches 90 kilometres through the Koro Sea — 20 inhabited volcanic islands whose communities maintained warrior traditions until Christian missionaries arrived in the 1840s. This 9-day circuit moves by ferry through the Yasawa chain from Port Denarau, stopping at traditional villages, the sacred Sawa-i-Lau cave system, and the crystal Blue Lagoon of the northern Yasawas. Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this remote Fijian archipelago. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.
The Yasawa Ratu (chiefs) still hold genuine political and spiritual authority in their communities, and the tabu (taboo) system — which prohibits entry to certain sacred sites without the chief's permission — is enforced to this day.
The Yasawa Chiefs · Ratu Authority, Tabu & the Sacred Caves of Sawa-i-Lau
The Yasawa Island chain stretches 90 kilometres through the Koro Sea — 20 inhabited volcanic islands whose communities maintained warrior traditions and cannibalism until Christian missionaries arrived in the 1840s. The Yasawa chiefs (Ratu) still hold genuine political and spiritual authority in their communities, and the tabu (taboo) system — which prohibits entry to certain sacred sites without the chief's permission — is enforced to this day.
The Blue Lagoon, made famous by the 1980 Brooke Shields film, is in the northern Yasawas — but the real treasure is the cave system of Sawa-i-Lau, where ancient Fijian petroglyphs and a fresh-water cave pool accessible only by underwater swim represent one of the Pacific's most extraordinary cultural and natural sites.
The Yasawas' personality is raw volcanic beauty, living chiefly culture, and extraordinary underwater worlds — sacred caves, crystal lagoons, and village ceremonies unchanged for centuries. All experiences below are paid directly to local operators at point of service.
