Surfing Heritage
Hawaii is the only US state with a non-European Indigenous majority heritage — the Native Hawaiian people (Kanaka Maoli) are Polynesian, descendants of the extraordinary navigators who crossed the Pacific from the Marquesas Islands around 400 CE using only stars, ocean currents, and wave patterns to guide them. The Hawaiian Kingdom was an internationally recognised sovereign nation — with its own monarchy, constitution, and diplomatic relationships — until it was illegally overthrown in 1893 by American businessmen backed by US Marines, and annexed by the United States in 1898.
The Hawaiian sovereignty movement is a living political reality today. Hawaiian culture — hula, mele (chant), the Hawaiian language, traditional navigation, surfing (invented by Hawaiians), and the ahupuaʻa land management system — is experiencing a powerful renaissance. The Big Island sits over one of the most active volcanic hotspots on Earth — Kīlauea, one of the world’s most continuously active volcanoes, is sacred to the Hawaiian goddess Pele.

Kanaka Maoli · The Polynesian Navigators Who Found Hawaii
The settlement of Hawaii was one of the greatest feats of navigation in human history. The Polynesian voyagers who reached Hawaii around 400 CE — and again in a second wave from Tahiti around 1000 CE — crossed over 2,000 miles of open ocean in double-hulled canoes, navigating by stars, ocean swells, wind patterns, bird behaviour, and cloud formations. The Hōkūleʻa, a traditional Hawaiian double-hulled voyaging canoe launched in 1975, has since sailed over 150,000 miles across the Pacific using only traditional navigation.
The Hawaiian Kingdom, established in 1810 under King Kamehameha I, was a fully modern sovereign state — it had a written constitution (1840), a legislature, a supreme court, and diplomatic relations with the United States, Britain, France, and other nations. The overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893 was acknowledged as illegal by the United States Congress in 1993, in a formal apology signed by President Clinton. The Hawaiian sovereignty movement — seeking various forms of self-determination, from federal recognition to full independence — is active today. The Hawaiian language, nearly extinct by the 1980s, now has over 18,000 speakers and is taught in Hawaiian-medium schools.
Hawaii is where Polynesian civilisation meets American history, where active volcanoes meet sacred culture, where the world’s greatest navigators made their final landfall — from the volcanic fire of Kīlauea to the sea cliffs of Na Pali, from the USS Arizona Memorial to the Hōkūleʻa voyaging canoe.
