Liberia is one of only two African countries never colonised by Europe. Founded in 1847 by freed American slaves, it is the oldest African republic. Cape Mount sits at the northwestern tip of Liberia, bordering Sierra Leone — a region of extraordinary natural beauty, colonial-era heritage, and living Kpelle and Vai culture.
The Vai people of Cape Mount are one of the few African ethnic groups to have independently developed their own writing system — the Vai syllabary, created in the 1830s, predating most formal literacy programs in West Africa. Cape Mount was also one of the first landing points for freed American slaves returning to Africa — its history is layered, complex, and deeply moving.
Robertsport sits on a dramatic headland above the Atlantic — a tiny fishing village that has become one of West Africa's most talked-about surf destinations.
