Departure
Great Zimbabwe is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world — the largest stone structure in sub-Saharan Africa, built by the Shona civilisation between the 11th and 15th centuries, and the origin of Zimbabwe's name. Combined with Matobo Hills — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary granite kopjes, ancient San rock art, and one of Africa's finest white rhino sanctuaries — this 8-day journey is Zimbabwe's definitive heritage experience.
Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city and the heart of Ndebele culture, is one of Africa's most underrated destinations. The Ndebele people, descended from the Zulu kingdom, built one of southern Africa's most powerful kingdoms here in the 19th century. This is where Zimbabwe's deep history, extraordinary wildlife, and living culture converge in one unforgettable journey.
The Ndebele kingdom of Matabeleland was founded by Mzilikazi, a general of Shaka Zulu, who led his people north from South Africa in the 1830s. His son Lobengula was the last Ndebele king, whose kingdom fell to Cecil John Rhodes and the British South Africa Company in 1893. Rhodes himself is buried in Matobo Hills — at a site he called "World's View" — one of the most dramatic burial sites on earth. The San people left extraordinary rock art throughout Matobo Hills, some of the finest in southern Africa.
