Sierra Leone's interior is one of West Africa's great undiscovered wilderness destinations. Beyond the beaches and the heritage of Freetown lies a country of extraordinary rainforest, rivers, and wildlife — and two of the finest protected areas in the region. Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a 12km² island in the Moa River, home to 11 species of primate including Chimpanzees, Diana monkeys, and the rare pygmy hippopotamus. Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the north is Sierra Leone's largest protected area — a vast wilderness of forest, savanna, and rivers that few travellers ever reach.
This 8-day safari takes you deep into Sierra Leone's rainforest interior — through Mende forest communities, across the Moa River to Tiwai Island, and north to the extraordinary wilderness of Outamba-Kilimi. This is Sierra Leone for those who want to go beyond the obvious.
The Mende people of southern Sierra Leone are the country's second largest ethnic group and the dominant people of the forest interior. Their Poro and Sande secret societies — among the most powerful in West Africa — govern initiation, justice, and community life. The Sande society is unique in Africa as a female-led secret society with its own distinctive helmet masks, the Sowei, which are among the most collected African art objects in the world.
Tiwai Island has been a community-managed wildlife sanctuary since 1987 — one of the earliest examples of community conservation in West Africa. The local Mende communities around the Moa River have been the guardians of this extraordinary island for decades. Outamba-Kilimi in the north is Temne territory — a vast, little-visited wilderness that represents Sierra Leone's most ambitious conservation effort.
