Departure
Mauritania is one of the most extraordinary and least visited countries in Africa. Here, the Sahara Desert does not stop at the coast — it walks directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Banc d'Arguin National Park is where these two worlds collide: a UNESCO World Heritage site of global importance, home to millions of migratory birds and one of the most productive marine ecosystems on Earth.
The Imraguen people have fished these waters for centuries using methods unchanged since the Middle Ages — including an extraordinary partnership with Atlantic dolphins, who drive schools of mullet into the fishermen's nets in exchange for the fish that escape. This is one of the most remarkable human-wildlife relationships on the planet, and almost nobody outside Mauritania knows it exists.
This journey also includes the legendary Mauritania iron ore train — one of the longest trains in the world, up to 3km of ore wagons rolling from the Sahara mines at Zouerat to the Atlantic port at Nouadhibou. Passengers ride free on top of the wagons. It is one of Africa's great adventure travel experiences, and Daylite Digital is one of the first platforms to offer it as a curated experience.
Mauritania was the last country in the world to officially abolish slavery — in 1981 — and only criminalised it in 2007. The Haratin people, descendants of enslaved Africans, continue to navigate this legacy today. Their story is told honestly and with dignity on this journey — because understanding Mauritania means understanding this history.
The Bidan (White Moors) are of Arab and Berber descent, and their tea ceremony is one of the most elaborate in the world — three glasses, each one different, each one a statement of hospitality. The ancient Ghana Empire — the original, not the modern country — was based in what is now southeastern Mauritania. This is where West African civilisation began.
