Every day of this expedition begins at the water's edge — and on Guadeloupe, the water is volcanic, tropical, and alive. The island is shaped like a butterfly: Basse-Terre to the west, dominated by the active volcano La Soufrière and the dense rainforest of the Parc National de la Guadeloupe; Grande-Terre to the east, a flatter limestone plateau of white sand beaches and sugarcane fields. Between the two wings lies the Rivière Salée, a mangrove channel that connects the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic.

Guadeloupe is France — like Martinique, a full department of the French Republic, not a colony or territory. Its people are French citizens who speak both French and Guadeloupéen Creole, who cook colombo and accras alongside baguettes and croissants, and who have built one of the Caribbean's most layered cultures from the collision of West African, French, East Indian, and indigenous Arawak traditions. The island's most celebrated intellectual is Saint-John Perse — Nobel Prize-winning poet, born in Pointe-à-Pitre — who spent his life writing about the sea, the wind, and the memory of the Caribbean.
The relationship between the Guadeloupéens and water is inseparable from the island's shape. The fishermen of the west coast launch their boats from the shadow of La Soufrière. The rum distilleries of the north — Damoiseau, Bologne, Longueteau — draw their water from the volcanic rivers that descend from the mountain. The mangrove channels of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin are nurseries for the fish that feed the island.
