About This Expedition

Toronto is the most multicultural city on Earth — over 200 languages are spoken, and over half the population was born outside Canada. It sits on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Huron-Wendat peoples. The city’s neighbourhoods tell the story of global migration: Kensington Market, Chinatown, Little Italy, Little Portugal, Greektown, Little India, and Scarborough — where Caribbean, South Asian, and East Asian communities have built extraordinary cultural ecosystems.

Niagara Falls — one of the world’s great natural wonders, 51 metres high and carrying more fresh water than any other waterfall on Earth — sits 130 kilometres from Toronto on the border with the USA.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Haudenosaunee & Anishinaabe · The First Peoples of Toronto

The land on which Toronto stands has been home to Indigenous peoples for over 10,000 years. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) — one of the world’s oldest democratic confederacies, whose Great Law of Peace influenced the framers of the United States Constitution — have deep roots in this territory. The Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, are the most recent Indigenous stewards of the land. The Toronto Purchase of 1787 was later found to be fraudulent and incomplete, and was renegotiated in 2010 for $145 million. The word “Toronto” itself is derived from the Mohawk word “Tkaronto,” meaning “where there are trees standing in the water.”

Toronto’s multicultural identity is the result of deliberate immigration policy, beginning with the 1971 Multiculturalism Act under Pierre Trudeau, which made Canada the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as official government policy. The result is a city where over 200 languages are spoken, where the food scene is genuinely global, and where communities from every corner of the world have built lasting cultural institutions.
