About This Expedition

Beyond the Ural Mountains lies Siberia and the Russian Far East, a vast frontier stretching to the Pacific Ocean. This immense region is home to Russians alongside Indigenous peoples including the Buryats, Evenks, Yakuts (Sakha), and many others, each preserving distinctive languages, traditions, and spiritual beliefs that predate the Russian state by thousands of years.

At the heart of Siberia lies Lake Baikal — the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lake, holding around 20% of Earth's unfrozen freshwater. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, including the endemic Baikal seal (nerpa), the only exclusively freshwater seal on earth. The Trans-Siberian Railway — 9,289 km, built 1891–1916 — links European Russia with the Pacific, crossing forests, mountains, and grasslands before reaching Vladivostok, Russia's principal Pacific port. This 12-day expedition moves through the full arc of Siberian civilisation, from Irkutsk's 18th-century merchant heritage to the volcanic frontier of Kamchatka, with Daylite Digital's Ambassador navigating the layers that most visitors never reach.

The Buryats, the Baikal Seal, the Trans-Siberian & Russia's Pacific Frontier

Beyond the Ural Mountains lies Siberia and the Russian Far East, a vast frontier stretching to the Pacific Ocean. This immense region is home to Russians alongside Indigenous peoples including the Buryats, Evenks, Yakuts (Sakha), and many others, each preserving distinctive languages, traditions, and spiritual beliefs. The Buryats — a Mongolic people indigenous to the Lake Baikal region — maintain shamanic and Buddhist traditions that survived Soviet suppression and continue to shape the cultural life of the Baikal shore.

Lake Baikal holds around 20% of Earth's unfrozen freshwater and contains over 3,500 species of plants and animals, two thirds of which are found nowhere else on earth. In February and March, the lake freezes to a depth of over a metre, producing ice of extraordinary transparency — one of the world's great natural spectacles. Vladivostok — founded in 1860 as a Russian military outpost on the Pacific — became the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and Russia's principal Pacific naval base, a city that looks simultaneously toward Moscow and toward Japan, Korea, and China across the sea.

Your Daylite Digital Ambassador connects you to this layered world — the Buryat guide who explains shamanic traditions from the sacred shores of Baikal, the railway historian who traces the Trans-Siberian's construction through the Siberian taiga, and the Vladivostok local who reads the city's Pacific identity from its Golden Bridge and its harbour.
