The Maroon people of Suriname represent one of the most powerful freedom stories in the Americas. They are the descendants of Africans who were enslaved and brought to Suriname by Dutch colonisers — and who escaped. They fled into the Amazon rainforest, established independent nations deep within the jungle, and fought and negotiated their freedom over generations. The Saramaka, Ndyuka, and Matawai nations each developed their own languages, governance systems, spiritual traditions, art forms, and ways of life — preserving them intact for centuries, far from colonial reach. Their woodcarving, textile art, and oral histories are among the most distinctive cultural expressions in the Americas.
Long before the Maroon nations arrived, the Amazon was home to the Lokono and Kali’na peoples — Amerindian communities whose relationship with this landscape stretches back thousands of years.
