Departure
Gabon is one of Africa's greatest conservation success stories — a country that has protected over 11% of its land as national parks, covering some of the most pristine rainforest on the continent. With 80% of its territory covered by equatorial rainforest, Gabon is home to extraordinary wildlife including forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, Chimpanzees, mandrills, and over 600 species of birds. It is one of the last places on earth where forest elephants roam in significant numbers.
This 8-day safari takes you from Libreville — Gabon's vibrant Atlantic capital — into the heart of Lopé National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects one of the oldest and most biodiverse rainforest ecosystems in Africa. Lopé is extraordinary: ancient savanna meets dense equatorial forest, creating a mosaic of habitats that supports an astonishing diversity of wildlife. This is Gabon for those who understand that the greatest wildlife experiences are found where the forest is still intact.
Lopé National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 for its outstanding universal value as one of the most important refuges for biodiversity in Central Africa. The park contains a remarkable mosaic of tropical rainforest and relict patches of savanna — a landscape shaped by the last Ice Age — and is home to the largest population of western lowland gorillas in any protected area in the world.
The forest elephant is Gabon's most iconic animal — smaller than the savanna elephant, adapted to life in dense rainforest, and critically important as a seed disperser for the trees of the Congo Basin. Gabon protects more forest elephants than any other country in Africa. Libreville, founded in 1849 as a settlement for freed slaves, is a vibrant Atlantic city with a rich Gabonese cultural heritage, extraordinary cuisine, and a growing arts scene.
