The Afro-Guyanese story is one of survival, resistance, and cultural preservation against extraordinary odds. The ancestors of the Afro-Guyanese people were brought to Guyana as enslaved Africans by Dutch and British colonisers. After emancipation in 1838, they did something remarkable: they pooled their resources — the wages they had earned and saved — to purchase the very plantation land on which they had been enslaved. They established independent villages, built churches and schools, and created communities rooted in African heritage and Caribbean identity. This act of collective economic freedom was one of the first of its kind in the Americas.
Their Kumfa spiritual drumming, Masquerade traditions, pepperpot cuisine, and village life are living testaments to a people who refused to be erased. Long before the Afro-Guyanese arrived, the interior of Guyana was home to the Makushi and Wapishana peoples — Amerindian nations whose relationship with the Iwokrama rainforest and the Rupununi savannah stretches back thousands of years. The Makushi people today co-manage the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation, one of the most important conservation partnerships in the world. Their knowledge of the forest, its medicines, its animals, and its waterways is irreplaceable. This expedition honours both the freedom heritage of the Afro-Guyanese coast and the ancient stewardship of the Amerindian interior.
