About This Expedition

Panama is the crossroads of the world — the narrow isthmus where two oceans meet, where the greatest engineering feat of the 20th century was carved through jungle and mountain, and where some of the most extraordinary Indigenous cultures in the Americas have maintained their sovereignty and way of life for centuries. In 7 days, this expedition takes you from the colonial grandeur of Panama City and the thundering locks of the Canal, into the rainforest villages of the Emberá people, and out to the turquoise Caribbean paradise of the Guna Yala archipelago.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this entire route. All experiences, tours, canal visits, island transfers, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators and community hosts.

Guna People · Emberá People · Two Nations at the Crossroads of the World

The Guna people of the San Blas Islands are one of the most politically autonomous Indigenous nations in the Americas. They govern their own territory — the Comarca Guna Yala — control their own tourism, and have maintained their language, dress, and traditions with extraordinary pride and discipline. Guna women wear the mola — a reverse applique textile of extraordinary geometric complexity — as everyday dress. The mola is not a craft for tourists; it is a living cosmological language worn on the body. Each piece takes weeks to make and encodes the Guna worldview in colour and pattern.

The Emberá people of the Darién rainforest are master craftspeople and forest guides. Their knowledge of medicinal plants, animal behaviour, and forest ecology has been passed down through generations of living in one of the most biodiverse environments on Earth. The Emberá also carry the legacy of the Afro-Panamanian communities — the descendants of enslaved Africans brought to build the Camino Real trade route — whose Congo dance tradition and Black Christ of Portobelo represent a heritage of resistance and survival that shaped Panama’s identity as profoundly as the Canal itself.

9 Experiences · Guna · Emberá · Canal · Two Oceans

Panama is the only country in the world where you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific and set over the Caribbean. The Canal is not just an engineering marvel — it is a monument to colonial ambition, forced labour, and the extraordinary human cost of connecting the world’s trade routes.
