About This Expedition

New Orleans is the most African city in North America. Founded by the French in 1718, colonised by the Spanish, sold to the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase, New Orleans developed a culture entirely unlike anywhere else in America — a fusion of French, Spanish, African, Caribbean, and Native American influences that produced Creole culture, the most distinctive and complex cultural identity in the United States.

Congo Square — now part of Louis Armstrong Park — was the only place in the antebellum South where enslaved people were legally permitted to gather, drum, dance, and maintain African cultural practices. From those Sunday gatherings grew jazz — the most influential music form of the 20th century.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, tours, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Creole People · The African Soul of Louisiana

Tremé — America's oldest African-American neighbourhood — is the heart of Creole culture, second-line parades, and Mardi Gras Indian tradition. The Mardi Gras Indians are African-American communities who have honoured Native American tribes through elaborate hand-sewn suits and ceremonial processions for over a century.

The French Quarter preserves the architecture of colonial New Orleans — the iron lacework balconies, the Creole townhouses, the hidden courtyards — built largely by enslaved craftsmen whose names were never recorded. The Garden District tells the story of antebellum wealth built on the labour of enslaved people on the surrounding sugar and cotton plantations.

Creole cuisine — gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, beignets, po'boys — is the direct inheritance of West African cooking traditions transformed by French technique and Caribbean spice.

8 Experiences · One Creole City

New Orleans is the only city in America where African culture was never fully suppressed — where the drum kept beating, the food kept its African roots, and the music became the soundtrack of the 20th century.
