About this experience

The Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to two of the most extraordinary pre-colonial African civilisations ever to exist — the Kuba Kingdom and the Luba Empire. These are not footnotes in history. They are among the great civilisations of the world, with sophisticated governance, extraordinary art, and cultural traditions that continue to this day.

The Kuba Kingdom — one of Africa's most sophisticated pre-colonial civilisations — produced geometric textile patterns so complex they influenced Henri Matisse. Their raffia cloth is among the most technically accomplished textile work ever created anywhere on Earth. The Kuba king, the Nyim, still reigns at the palace of Nsheng. This is a living kingdom.

The Luba Empire was one of the great African kingdoms of the Great Lakes region. Their memory boards — lukasa — are extraordinary objects that encode the entire history of a people in beadwork. No writing needed. The history of a civilisation carried in an object you can hold in your hands. This 10-day safari takes you into the heart of central Democratic Republic of Congo to encounter these civilisations directly — not in a museum, but in the communities where they still live.

Luba · Kuba · Mongo · Lunda People — Democratic Republic of Congo Kingdom Heritage

The Kuba Kingdom is one of Africa's most sophisticated pre-colonial civilisations. Their geometric textile patterns are among the most complex ever created by any culture on Earth. Their raffia cloth influenced Matisse — when he first saw Kuba textiles in a Paris museum, he said they changed how he understood pattern and form. The palace at Nsheng still stands. The Kuba king, the Nyim, still reigns. This is not a dead civilisation preserved in a museum. It is a living kingdom.

The Luba Empire was one of the great African kingdoms of the Great Lakes region. Their memory boards — lukasa — are extraordinary objects that encode history in beadwork. No writing needed. The entire history of a people carried in an object. The Luba people understood that memory is not just stored in text — it can be stored in form, in texture, in the arrangement of beads on a board. This is one of the most sophisticated information systems ever devised by any culture.
