The himene tarava — choral singing tradition of French Polynesia, characterised by rapid rhythmic breathing between harmonies — is a UNESCO Intangible Heritage and one of the most distinctive musical sounds on earth. The black pearl (poe rava), cultivated in Tahitian lagoons since the 1960s, turned French Polynesia into the world's most important luxury pearl producer.
