About This Expedition

This 10-day French Polynesia circuit moves from Papeete's vibrant waterfront market and the sacred Marae Arahurahu temple on Tahiti Nui, across the lagoon to Moorea — where humpback whales from Antarctic feeding grounds arrive between July and October to calve in the warm Society Islands waters. Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this extraordinary island pair. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

French Polynesia is the cultural hearth of all Eastern Polynesia. The Mā'ohi people of Tahiti are the cultural ancestors of Hawaiian, Māori, Marquesan, and Rapanui (Easter Island) peoples — all trace their origins to this Society Islands cultural hearth. Paul Gauguin abandoned Paris for Tahiti in 1891 and produced the paintings that permanently shaped Western imagination about the Pacific.

The Mā'ohi People · Cultural Hearth of Eastern Polynesia & the Island That Inspired the World

The Mā'ohi people of Tahiti are the cultural ancestors of all Eastern Polynesia — Hawaiian, Māori, Marquesan, and Rapanui (Easter Island) peoples all trace their origins to this Society Islands cultural hearth. Their heiva festival — competitive dance, outrigger canoe racing, and stone lifting — is the Pacific's most spectacular cultural celebration. Captain Cook visited Tahiti three times (1769, 1773, 1777).

Paul Gauguin abandoned Paris for Tahiti in 1891 and produced the paintings that permanently shaped Western imagination about the Pacific. The himene tarava — choral singing tradition of French Polynesia, characterised by rapid rhythmic breathing between harmonies — is a UNESCO Intangible Heritage and one of the most distinctive musical sounds on earth. The black pearl (poe rava), cultivated in Tahitian lagoons since the 1960s, turned French Polynesia into the world's most important luxury pearl producer.
