About This Expedition

This seven-day expedition moves through the three oldest layers of Singapore's identity - the Malay Kampong Glam quarter where Sultan Hussein Shah signed the 1819 treaty with Stamford Raffles, the Colonial District where the British Empire built its greatest Asian trading port, and the Tamil Little India where South Indian labourers, traders, and professionals from the 1820s built a living civilisation of temple culture, banana-leaf cuisine, and classical dance that links Singapore to 2,000 years of South Indian history.

Singapore's colonial architecture is among the finest in Asia - the Raffles Hotel (1887), the National Museum (1887), the Victoria Theatre (1862), Fort Canning Hill where Raffles first raised the British flag, and the Padang cricket ground where colonial society gathered for a century. The Arab Street perfume souk, the Sultan Mosque golden dome, and the Haji Lane boutique strip of Kampong Glam represent the Malay-Arab trading culture that predates British arrival. And in Little India, the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple (1881) and the Deepavali Festival of Lights sustain a Tamil culture of extraordinary depth and beauty.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this seven-day Singapore expedition. All activity fees, entry fees, and transport costs are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

The Orang Laut, the Sultans, the British & the Tamil South Indians

Singapore's Malay heritage as the original Orang Laut (Sea People) of the ancient Temasek kingdom predates British arrival by centuries - the lion (Singa) that gave Singapore its name was seen by the Srivijayan prince Sang Nila Utama in the 11th century. Kampong Glam is where Sultan Hussein Shah signed the 1819 treaty with Stamford Raffles, ceding the island that became the British Empire's greatest Asian trading port.

The Tamil South Indian community - brought to Singapore as labourers, traders, and professionals from the 1820s - built the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple (1881) in Little India and sustain a living culture of Deepavali light festivals, banana-leaf thali rice tradition, kolam floor art, and Bharatanatyam classical dance that links Singapore to 2,000 years of South Indian civilisation. Your Daylite Ambassador navigates all three worlds.
