About This Expedition

Baja California is a 1,247-kilometre peninsula stretching into the Pacific — one of the most ecologically extraordinary environments in North America. The peninsula is flanked by two completely different bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean on the west, cold and whale-rich, and the Sea of Cortez on the east — described by Jacques Cousteau as the world's aquarium. Every year, grey whales migrate from Alaska to the warm lagoons of Baja to give birth — one of the great wildlife spectacles on Earth.

San Jose del Cabo and the East Cape offer world-class sport fishing, snorkelling, and diving, while the interior desert landscape of cardon cacti, volcanic mountains, and ancient rock art provides a dramatic contrast to the coastline. La Paz offers whale shark encounters in the Sea of Cortez — swimming alongside the largest fish on Earth in crystal-clear water.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, transport, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

The Cochimi & Kumeyaay · Guardians of the Peninsula

The Cochimi and Kumeyaay Indigenous peoples have inhabited this landscape for thousands of years, and their rock art — found in caves throughout the sierra — is recognised by UNESCO as among the most important prehistoric art in the Americas.

The Cochimi were the original inhabitants of the central and southern peninsula, a semi-nomadic people who developed a sophisticated knowledge of the desert environment over thousands of years. Their cave paintings at Sierra de San Francisco, executed in red, black, and white pigments, depict human figures, deer, whales, and abstract symbols in a style unlike any other rock art tradition in the Americas. UNESCO recognised this site in 1993 as a World Heritage Site of outstanding universal value.

The Kumeyaay people of northern Baja and southern California maintain a living cultural presence on both sides of the US-Mexico border today, with tribal nations, language programmes, and cultural institutions preserving their heritage.

Pacific Coast · Desert & Sea · What Awaits You

The Sea of Cortez is one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth — home to over 900 species of fish, 39 species of marine mammals, and more whale species than any other body of water in the world. The grey whale lagoons of Baja are the only places on Earth where grey whales actively approach small boats.
