The island sits in the shadow of Mont Pelée, one of the most powerful volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, whose 1902 eruption destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre and killed nearly 30,000 people in minutes. The ruins of Saint-Pierre now lie beneath the Caribbean Sea, forming one of the world's great wreck dive sites, while the volcanic soil above ground produces the sugarcane that feeds Martinique's celebrated agricole rum industry — the only rum in the world with its own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.

The wrecks of Saint-Pierre lie in water that was boiling in 1902.
