The Icefields Parkway — the 232-kilometre highway connecting Banff and Jasper — is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world, passing glaciers, turquoise glacier-fed lakes, and mountain peaks over 3,000 metres.
The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest non-polar ice masses in North America — and it is visibly retreating due to climate change, making it one of the most important and urgent natural sites to visit before it is gone. Banff is the oldest national park in Canada, established in 1885. Wildlife — grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, elk, bighorn sheep, moose — is abundant and visible throughout the Rockies.

The Nakoda (Stoney) people have lived in the foothills and mountains of what is now Alberta for thousands of years, developing an intimate knowledge of the Rockies — their passes, their seasons, their wildlife, and their medicines. The Blackfoot Confederacy — comprising the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, and Amskapi Piikani nations — controlled the vast grasslands east of the Rockies and used the mountain passes for trade and seasonal movement. Their territory stretched from the North Saskatchewan River to the Yellowstone, one of the largest Indigenous territories in North America.
Banff National Park was established in 1885 — and the Nakoda people were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands to create it, a pattern repeated across North America as national parks were carved from Indigenous territories. The hot springs at Banff, which prompted the park’s creation, had been used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European arrival. Jasper National Park — a designated dark sky preserve and one of the largest national parks in Canada — sits on the territory of the Secwépemc and other nations. The Northern Lights visible from Jasper in winter are among the most spectacular in the world.
The Canadian Rockies are where the continent reaches its most dramatic — turquoise lakes fed by ancient glaciers, a highway that passes through 232 kilometres of wilderness, a glacier you can walk on, and skies so dark that the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.
