About This Expedition

This 7-day Kiribati expedition moves through South Tarawa's extraordinary WWII battlefield, the I-Kiribati te maneaba clan governance tradition, and the world's greatest seabird colony on Christmas Island (Kiritimati). Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this equatorial Pacific circuit. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Kiribati is one of the Pacific's most extraordinary and least-visited destinations — a nation of 33 coral atolls spread across 3.5 million km² of ocean, on the front line of climate change, where the Battle of Tarawa left one of the Pacific War's most intense battlefields, and where Christmas Island hosts a seabird colony of 100 million birds — the largest in the world.

The I-Kiribati People · Te Maneaba Clan Governance · Battle of Tarawa · Climate Frontline

The I-Kiribati people (pronounced "I-Kiribas") inhabit 33 coral atolls spread across 3.5 million km² of ocean — the largest ocean territory of any nation relative to its land area. Their traditional te maneaba (community meeting house) system, in which every family clan has a designated sitting position and speaking order maintained for centuries, is one of the Pacific's most sophisticated governance traditions. The maneaba is not merely a building — it is a living constitutional document encoded in space.

The Battle of Tarawa (November 1943) — 76 hours of the most intense combat in the Pacific War, where 1,000 US Marines and 4,500 Japanese defenders died on an atoll 3 km long — is memorialised in bunkers, tanks, and human remains still visible in the lagoon today. The battle changed US amphibious assault doctrine and is studied in military academies worldwide.

Christmas Island (Kiritimati) — the world's largest coral atoll by land area — hosts one of the Pacific's greatest seabird colonies, with over 100 million birds nesting simultaneously. Kiribati is also one of the first nations that will be entirely submerged by rising sea levels — making every visit a witness to a civilisation on the climate frontline.
