About this experience

Eritrea is one of Africa's most extraordinary and least visited countries — a nation that fought one of the longest independence wars in history and emerged with a culture of extraordinary resilience, pride, and beauty. Its capital Asmara is a UNESCO World Heritage city — a perfectly preserved Art Deco masterpiece built by the Italians in the 1930s, with modernist cinemas, futurist petrol stations, and rationalist government buildings that make it unlike any other city in Africa.

This 9-day safari takes you from Asmara's extraordinary Art Deco streets down to Massawa — one of the oldest ports on the Red Sea, a city of Ottoman palaces and coral-stone architecture — and then into the Danakil Depression, one of the most extreme and otherworldly landscapes on earth. The Danakil sits at 120 metres below sea level, with active volcanoes, sulphur springs, and salt flats that look like another planet. This is Eritrea for those who understand that the most extraordinary destinations are the ones the world hasn't discovered yet.

Asmara · Massawa · Danakil · Afar · Eritrean Heritage

Asmara was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 for its extraordinary collection of modernist architecture. Built by Italian colonists between 1935 and 1941, it contains over 400 buildings in Art Deco, Futurist, Rationalist, and Novecento styles — the largest concentration of modernist architecture in Africa. Walking its streets is like stepping into a 1930s Italian city transplanted to the Horn of Africa.

Massawa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the Red Sea — a port that has been controlled by the Aksumite Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Italy. Its old town contains extraordinary Ottoman palaces, coral-stone architecture, and a history that spans three thousand years of Red Sea trade. The Danakil Depression is one of the most geologically active places on earth — home to the Afar people, one of the world's most extraordinary nomadic cultures, who have lived in this extreme landscape for thousands of years.

⚠️ Key Things to Know Before You Travel

Eritrea is a genuinely extraordinary destination — UNESCO-listed Asmara, Red Sea islands, Massawa's historic architecture, unique culture and cuisine, and one of Africa's least-visited tourism markets. To ensure your journey is seamless, please read the following carefully before booking.

01 · Permits
Travel Permits Required
Foreign visitors generally need permission to travel more than approximately 25 km outside Asmara. Destinations including Massawa and the Danakil Depression region require permits. Your Daylite Digital Ambassador will assist with permit coordination.
02 · Connectivity
Internet & Mobile Data
Eritrea does not have standard mobile internet or data services. Internet access is available at select hotels, offices, and internet cafés — connections are often slow and unreliable. International roaming may not function. Local SIM cards can be difficult for visitors to obtain. Plan accordingly.
03 · Finance
Cash is Essential
Eritrea is heavily cash-based. ATMs are essentially unavailable. Credit cards are generally not accepted. Travelers must plan their finances carefully and carry sufficient cash before arrival.
04 · Photography
Photography Restrictions
Photography of military facilities, government buildings, airports, bridges, and similar infrastructure is restricted. Always ask before photographing in sensitive areas. Your Ambassador will guide you on what is appropriate.
05 · Advisories
Travel Advisories
Several governments advise travelers to exercise increased caution due to travel restrictions, limited consular assistance, and security concerns in some regions. Border areas can be particularly sensitive. Check your government's current travel advisory before departure.
Daylite Digital Note: Travel regulations, permit requirements, and communications infrastructure in Eritrea differ from most destinations. Travelers should confirm current visa, permit, and connectivity requirements before departure. Your Ambassador will provide a full pre-departure briefing covering all current conditions.
