Nevis is the quieter sister island — a single volcanic peak rising from the sea, ringed by Pinney's Beach, one of the finest stretches of Caribbean sand in the Lesser Antilles. Together they form the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the most historically layered.

St Kitts & Nevis is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere by both area and population. It was also one of the most important sugar-producing colonies in the British Empire — at its peak, St Kitts was known as the Mother Colony of the West Indies, the first British colony in the Caribbean, from which settlers spread to Antigua, Barbados, and beyond. The sugar economy was built entirely on the forced labour of West African enslaved people, and the descendants of those people are the Kittitians and Nevisians of today — a people whose culture carries the African drum in the masquerade festival, the African rhythm in the string band music, and the African resilience in the way they rebuilt their nation after emancipation.
Brimstone Hill Fortress is the most visible monument to this history — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by enslaved African labour to protect British sugar interests, now a monument to the people who built it. Nevis is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, the American Founding Father, whose story is inseparable from the sugar economy and the enslaved people who made it possible.
