The Aztec — or Mexica — were the last and greatest of the Mesoamerican civilisations, a people who rose from obscure origins in the 13th century to build an empire that stretched from the Gulf Coast to the Pacific, encompassing over 5 million people at its height. Tenochtitlan — founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco — was a city of canals, causeways, floating gardens, and monumental temples that astonished the Spanish conquistadors who arrived in 1519.
The Aztec did not simply disappear with the conquest. Over 1.5 million Nahua people — the direct descendants of the Aztec — live in Mexico today, speaking Nahuatl as a living language. Nahuatl words are embedded in everyday Mexican Spanish and in English: chocolate, tomato, avocado, chilli — all come from Nahuatl.
The Templo Mayor, the great pyramid at the heart of Tenochtitlan, was discovered beneath the Zocalo in 1978 and is now one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas.
