Liberia is one of only two African countries never colonised by Europe — the other being Ethiopia. Founded in 1847 by freed American slaves, it is the oldest African republic. Its flag deliberately resembles the American flag — a complex and fascinating origin story that sets Liberia apart from every other nation on the continent.
Sapo National Park is one of West Africa's last remaining primary rainforests — ancient, dense, and almost completely unvisited. The Americo-Liberians — descendants of freed American slaves who returned to Africa — ruled Liberia for 133 years. The Poro Society is a powerful secret society that governs social life across Liberia and Sierra Leone — its traditions are ancient, its influence still deeply felt today. Traditional medicine, elaborate masks, and warrior traditions define the Grebo and Kpelle peoples of the interior.
