About This Expedition

Tokyo is the world's most populated metropolis and its most quietly astonishing — a city of 14 million people where ancient Shinto shrines stand in the shadow of neon towers, where a bowl of ramen can take a chef 30 years to perfect, and where the bullet train departs to the second. In 10 days, you move through Tokyo's many identities: the sacred calm of Asakusa's Senso-ji temple at dawn, the electric chaos of Shibuya crossing at midnight, the volcanic silence of Mt. Fuji's fifth station, and the theatrical spectacle of sumo wrestlers performing rituals unchanged for two millennia.

The Yanaka and Asakusa districts preserve Edo-period Tokyo — wooden shopfronts, paper lanterns, and the smell of incense from neighbourhood shrines. Harajuku's Takeshita Street and Akihabara's electronics towers represent the other Tokyo: a city that reinvents itself every decade while keeping its ancient soul intact. Tsukiji's outer market, still the world's greatest seafood bazaar, feeds the city before dawn. This is a 10-day expedition through all of it.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this Tokyo circuit. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Edo · Meiji · The People Who Built Tokyo

Tokyo was Edo — a fishing village that became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603 and grew into the world's largest city by 1800. The samurai culture of the Edo period (1603–1868) produced Japan's most enduring values: precision, discipline, aesthetic restraint, and the concept of shokunin — the craftsman who dedicates a lifetime to mastering a single skill. The ramen chef, the sushi master, the temple carpenter — all are shokunin. Tokyo's food culture, its architecture, and its social codes are all expressions of this philosophy.

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 opened Japan to the world and produced the Tokyo you see today — a city that absorbed Western technology and aesthetics while preserving its Shinto and Buddhist spiritual core. The result is a city of extraordinary contrasts: vending machines selling hot sake next to 1,400-year-old temples, robot restaurants next to centuries-old tea houses. Sumo wrestling — Japan's national sport and a living Shinto ceremony — connects modern Tokyo directly to its mythological origins. Every bout in the dohyo ring is a ritual as much as a contest.
