Yamana People · Yaghan · 10,000 Years at the End of the World
The Yamana people — also known as the Yaghan — lived at the southern tip of South America for over 10,000 years. They navigated the Beagle Channel in bark canoes, survived sub-Antarctic conditions that would kill most humans within hours, and built a rich culture of oral tradition, ceremony, and deep ecological knowledge. They did not wear clothing in the conventional sense — they coated their bodies in animal fat and kept fires burning in their canoes to survive temperatures that regularly dropped below freezing. They were, by any measure, one of the most resilient peoples in human history.
When Charles Darwin encountered the Yamana in 1833, he was simultaneously astonished and dismissive — unable to comprehend how human beings could survive in such conditions. European contact brought catastrophe: missionaries, disease, and forced settlement destroyed a culture that had endured for millennia. Today, only one known fluent speaker of the Yamana language remains — Cristina Calderón, known as the last Yaghan. This expedition honours the extraordinary legacy of the Yamana people and the land they called home for ten thousand years.
Ushuaia sits at the convergence of the Andes, the Beagle Channel, and the sub-Antarctic wilderness. It is a place of extraordinary natural drama, deep indigenous history, and the peculiar human impulse to go as far south as the land will allow.
