Ellis Island
New York City was built by immigrants — and that story is written into every neighbourhood. The island of Manhattan was purchased from the Lenape people, the original inhabitants, by Dutch colonists in 1626. By the 19th century it had become the entry point for millions of Europeans who poured through Ellis Island and built the cultural capital of the 20th century.
Harlem — the cultural capital of Black America — was the birthplace of the Harlem Renaissance, the extraordinary flowering of African-American art, literature, jazz, and intellectual thought in the 1920s that changed American culture permanently.
Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, transport, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.
The Lenape · Original People of Mannahatta
Before New York City, there was Mannahatta — the Lenape word for "island of many hills." The Lenape people inhabited this landscape for thousands of years, living in a network of villages across the island and the surrounding region. They were skilled traders, farmers, and fishermen who maintained complex diplomatic relationships with neighbouring nations.
In 1626, Dutch colonists purchased Manhattan from the Lenape for trade goods — a transaction whose terms and meaning were understood very differently by each party. Within decades, the Lenape had been displaced from their homeland through a combination of disease, warfare, and colonial expansion. Today, Lenape descendants maintain cultural organisations and language revitalisation programmes.
The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s represents another foundational chapter — when African-American writers, artists, musicians, and intellectuals transformed Harlem into the cultural capital of Black America. Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong were among the figures who shaped a movement that permanently changed American culture.
New York City is the most culturally layered city in the Americas — a place where the Lenape past, the immigrant present, and the African-American cultural legacy exist side by side in every neighbourhood.
