About This Expedition

This 9-day Palau expedition moves through Koror, the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, Jellyfish Lake, Blue Corner, and the WWII battlefield of Peleliu. Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this Micronesian circuit. All activity fees, dive fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Palau is one of the world's last true ocean wildernesses — a nation of 340 islands where the government has banned commercial shark fishing, declared 80% of its waters a marine sanctuary, and where ancient conservation traditions predate Western environmentalism by centuries. The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on Earth.

The Palauan People · Micronesian Matrilineal Clan Culture & the World's First Shark Sanctuary

The Palauan people are Micronesian — one of the Pacific's most distinct cultural groups, with a matrilineal clan system (kebliil) in which all land, titles, and political authority pass through the female line, and where the bai (men's meeting house) with its elaborately painted story boards (dilukai) recording clan history in pictographic narrative is the centre of political life.

Palau established the world's first shark sanctuary in 2009 — banning all commercial shark fishing in its waters — and its Omekesang (conservation tradition) of declaring areas of reef as off-limits has been practised for centuries before Western conservation science arrived. This is not modern environmentalism — it is ancient Palauan law.

The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — contains Jellyfish Lake, where 8 million golden jellyfish with no stinging cells have evolved in an enclosed marine lake, creating the world's most extraordinary open-water swimming experience. Blue Corner is consistently ranked among the world's top three dive sites.
