About this expedition

Every day of this expedition begins at the water's edge — and on Isla Margarita, the water is the Caribbean at its most luminous. Known as the Caribbean Pearl, Isla Margarita is Venezuela's premier island destination — a place of turquoise bays, coral reefs, colonial fishing villages, and one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the southern Caribbean. The island sits off the northeastern coast of Venezuela, separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Cariaco, and has been a centre of pearl diving, trade, and Afro-Venezuelan culture since the 16th century. Playa El Agua, on the northeastern coast, is the island's signature beach — a long arc of white sand and warm Caribbean surf. Pampataro, on the eastern tip, is a colonial fishing village of painted houses, wooden boats, and Afro-Venezuelan heritage. The coral reefs of the Macanao Peninsula and the waters around Los Frailes islands are among the most pristine in the Caribbean. Cumana, on the mainland coast, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in South America — founded in 1515 — and holds the colonial heritage of the entire Venezuelan Caribbean coast.

Daylite Digital is an accommodation curator. We secure your hotel or guesthouse across this entire Venezuela circuit — that is what your package price covers. All snorkel gear fees, boat charter fees, catamaran fees, cultural access fees, transfers, and meals are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators. The Daylite Ambassador is an optional service, available separately.

The Venezuelan People · Pearl Divers, Afro-Venezuelan Heritage and the Caribbean Coast

Venezuela's Caribbean coast has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Guaiqueri people, the original inhabitants of Isla Margarita, who were skilled fishermen and navigators. Spanish colonisers arrived in 1498 — Columbus himself sighted the Venezuelan coast on his third voyage — and established pearl diving operations on Isla Margarita and the nearby island of Cubagua, which became the first European settlement in South America. The pearl trade brought enslaved Africans to the Venezuelan coast, whose descendants form the Afro-Venezuelan communities of Pampataro, Boca del Rio, and the mainland coast. Venezuela gained independence from Spain in 1821 under Simon Bolivar, the Liberator, who was born in Caracas.

Isla Margarita's water personality is pearl water — the luminous turquoise Caribbean that produced the pearls that funded the Spanish empire, and the warm, clear bays that sustain the fishing communities of Pampataro and Boca del Rio today. The coral reefs of the Macanao Peninsula and Los Frailes islands are among the most biodiverse in the southern Caribbean. All water experiences are arranged independently and paid to local operators at point of service.
