The USVI is an American territory in the northeastern Caribbean, a trio of main islands — St Thomas, St John, and St Croix — set in crystal Caribbean water where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea. Buck Island Reef National Monument off St Croix is one of the finest snorkel sites in the entire Caribbean, a protected underwater trail through living coral and crystal water designated a US National Monument. Trunk Bay on St John is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches, its crystal water and underwater snorkel trail drawing visitors from across the globe.

The US Virgin Islands are an unincorporated territory of the United States in the northeastern Caribbean, comprising three main islands — St Thomas, St John, and St Croix — and over 50 smaller cays and islets. The islands were originally inhabited by the Ciboney, Arawak, and Carib peoples before European contact. The USVI were a Danish colony — the Danish West Indies — from the 17th century until 1917, when the United States purchased them from Denmark for $25 million. The USVI people are a blend of African, Danish, American, and Caribbean heritage, shaped by centuries of plantation agriculture, maritime trade, and island life.
The USVI's position at the northeastern edge of the Caribbean, where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea, gives the islands their defining characteristic — crystal water, steady trade winds, and some of the finest reef systems in the Caribbean. Buck Island Reef National Monument off St Croix was designated by President Kennedy in 1961 and expanded in 2001. St John is 60% national park, one of the most protected islands in the Caribbean, its crystal water and coral reefs among the healthiest in the region.
