World's Deepest Canyon
This is Peru beyond Machu Picchu — a 10-day southern circuit that takes you to the roof of the world, deep into the Amazon basin, and along the edge of one of the planet’s most dramatic canyons. Lake Titicaca at 3,812 metres above sea level is the world’s highest navigable lake, home to the Uros people who have lived on floating reed islands for centuries. From there, the expedition descends to Puerto Maldonado — the gateway to the Tambopata Amazon Reserve, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.
Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this entire southern circuit. All tours, flights, boat excursions, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.
Uros People · Guardians of Lake Titicaca
The Uros are one of the oldest Indigenous peoples of the Lake Titicaca region, with a history that predates the Inca Empire. For centuries they have lived on extraordinary floating islands constructed entirely from totora reeds harvested from the lake. These islands are continuously maintained and rebuilt by each generation, reflecting a remarkable tradition of engineering, adaptation, and resilience that has survived for over a thousand years at 3,812 metres above sea level.
Today, Uros families continue to preserve their cultural identity through traditional fishing practices, reed craftsmanship, boat building, music, storytelling, and community life. The Taquile people of Taquile Island hold a UNESCO-recognised textile tradition — Taquile men knit as a cultural practice, and the island community governs itself by ancient Inca principles of reciprocity and collective responsibility. More than a tourist attraction, the communities of Lake Titicaca represent living Indigenous heritages that continue to thrive on the sacred waters of the world’s highest lake.
Southern Peru is one of the most ecologically and culturally diverse regions on Earth — where Andean civilisations built their world on the shores of a sacred lake, where the Amazon rainforest begins its vast descent to the Atlantic, and where condors ride thermals above canyons carved over millennia.
