The Zapotec are one of the oldest continuous civilisations in the Americas — a people who built cities in the clouds, developed one of the earliest writing systems in Mesoamerica, and created an astronomical observatory at Monte Alban that tracked celestial movements with extraordinary precision.
Over 400,000 Zapotec people live in Oaxaca today, speaking Zapotec languages — a family of over 60 distinct variants — maintaining weaving traditions, agricultural ceremonies, and community governance structures that predate the Spanish conquest by centuries. In the villages of the Central Valleys, life is still organised around the tequio (communal labour), the guelaguetza (reciprocal exchange), and the calendar of fiestas that marks the Zapotec year.
Oaxaca City itself — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is built on Zapotec and Mixtec foundations. The markets, the food, the textiles, the mezcal — all carry the living fingerprint of Indigenous Oaxaca.
