Known as the Caribbean Pearl, Isla Margarita is Venezuela's premier island destination — a place of turquoise bays, coral reefs, colonial fishing villages, and one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the southern Caribbean. The island sits off the northeastern coast of Venezuela, separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Cariaco, and has been a centre of pearl diving, trade, and Afro-Venezuelan culture since the 16th century. Playa El Agua, on the northeastern coast, is the island's signature beach — a long arc of white sand and warm Caribbean surf. Pampataro, on the eastern tip, is a colonial fishing village of painted houses, wooden boats, and Afro-Venezuelan heritage. The coral reefs of the Macanao Peninsula and the waters around Los Frailes islands are among the most pristine in the Caribbean. Cumana, on the mainland coast, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in South America — founded in 1515 — and holds the colonial heritage of the entire Venezuelan Caribbean coast.
