Washington DC was built by enslaved people — a fact that was largely erased from official history for over a century and has only recently been fully acknowledged. The Capitol building, the White House, the Washington Monument — all were constructed with enslaved labour, many of them from the DC area itself. The city that became the symbol of American democracy was built on the labour of people who had no rights within it.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture — opened in 2016 — is the most visited museum in Washington and one of the most powerful museum experiences in the world, tracing the journey from slavery through the Civil Rights Movement to the present. The National Mall is the stage on which American history has been performed — Martin Luther King Jr delivered "I Have a Dream" at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

The construction of Washington DC began in 1793. Enslaved people quarried the stone, cleared the land, and laid the foundations of the Capitol, the White House, and the monuments that would become the symbols of American freedom. Their names were not recorded. Their labour was not compensated.
Howard University, founded in 1867 just two years after the end of the Civil War, became the intellectual centre of African-American life in Washington. Thurgood Marshall, who argued Brown v. Board of Education before the Supreme Court and became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, studied at Howard Law School.
The U Street corridor — home to Duke Ellington, who was born in DC in 1899 — was the cultural capital of Black America before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 opened previously segregated spaces. Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street, opened in 1958, survived the 1968 riots that followed Martin Luther King Jr's assassination and remains a living monument to the resilience of Black Washington.
