About This Expedition

Québec is the only walled city north of Mexico in North America — and the most European city on the continent. Founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608, Old Québec City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its fortified walls, cobblestone streets, and 17th-century architecture intact after four centuries. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 — where the British defeated the French in a 15-minute engagement that changed the course of North American history — was fought on the cliffs above the St Lawrence River, just outside the city walls.

Montréal is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris — a city of festivals, food, jazz, and a cultural identity that is neither French nor English but distinctly Québécois. The city hosts the world-famous Montréal Jazz Festival (the largest jazz festival on earth), the Just for Laughs comedy festival, and a food scene that has produced some of the most celebrated chefs in North America.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

The Québécois · French Survival · A Nation Within a Nation

The Québécois are the descendants of approximately 10,000 French settlers who arrived in New France between 1608 and 1760 — and who, after the British conquest, chose to stay. Surrounded by an English-speaking continent, they maintained their language, their Catholic faith, their civil law, and their cultural identity through two and a half centuries of political pressure, assimilation attempts, and economic marginalisation. The Quiet Revolution of the 1960s transformed Québec from a conservative, church-dominated society into a modern, secular, culturally confident nation — producing a generation of artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers who defined a distinctly Québécois identity.

The October Crisis of 1970 — when Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act in response to FLQ kidnappings — and the two sovereignty referendums of 1980 and 1995 (the latter lost by less than 1%) are the defining political events of modern Québec. The language laws — Bill 101, passed in 1977 — made French the sole official language of Québec and transformed the province's cultural landscape. Today, Montréal is one of the most bilingual cities on earth — and one of the most creative, producing world-class circus arts (Cirque du Soleil was founded here), jazz, comedy, and cuisine.

The First Nations of Québec — the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), the Wendat (Huron), the Innu, the Cree, and the Inuit of Nunavik — were the original peoples of this territory, and their presence and land rights remain central to Québec's political and cultural life.
