The Battle of Tarawa (November 1943) — 76 hours of the most intense combat in the Pacific War, where 1,000 US Marines and 4,500 Japanese defenders died on an atoll 3 km long — is memorialised in bunkers, tanks, and human remains still visible in the lagoon today. The battle changed US amphibious assault doctrine and is studied in military academies worldwide.
Christmas Island (Kiritimati) — the world's largest coral atoll by land area — hosts one of the Pacific's greatest seabird colonies, with over 100 million birds nesting simultaneously.
