About This Expedition

Brasília is one of the most extraordinary cities ever built. Conceived from nothing in the late 1950s and constructed in just 41 months, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 — the only city built in the 20th century to receive that honour. It is a city of pure vision: the vision of President Juscelino Kubitschek, urban planner Lúcio Costa, and architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Walking through Brasília is walking through a living museum of modernist architecture. The National Congress, the Presidential Palace, the Supreme Court, the Cathedral — each building is a sculpture. Beyond the civic grandeur lies the Cerrado, one of the world’s most biodiverse savannas, home to Indigenous communities whose culture predates the city by millennia.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this route. All experiences, entry fees, and activities are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Niemeyer · Kubitschek · Cerrado Nations · The People Who Built Brasília

Brasília was built by two kinds of people: the visionaries who dreamed it, and the workers who made it real. President Juscelino Kubitschek promised to deliver “fifty years of progress in five” — and Brasília was his proof. Oscar Niemeyer, already one of the world’s great architects, designed the civic buildings that would make the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lúcio Costa laid out the Pilôt Plan — the city’s famous bird-or-aeroplane shape — in a master plan that remains one of the most celebrated pieces of urban design in history.

But the city was also built by the candangos — the migrant workers, mostly from Brazil’s impoverished Northeast, who poured the concrete, laid the roads, and raised the buildings in conditions of extraordinary hardship. Many stayed, forming the satellite cities that surround the Pilôt Plan and giving Brasília its full human complexity. And long before any of them arrived, the Cerrado was home to Indigenous nations — the Kayapó, the Xavante, the Bororo — whose relationship with this ancient savanna landscape stretches back thousands of years. Their presence, their knowledge, and their culture remain part of the living fabric of the region.

6 Experiences · One City of Vision

Brasília is a city of ideas made concrete. Every curve, every dome, every column tells the story of a nation that dared to build its capital from scratch in the heart of a savanna. This expedition explores both the modernist masterpiece and the ancient culture that surrounds it.
