This is the smallest island in the world shared by two sovereign states — the Dutch Sint Maarten in the south and the French Saint Martin in the north — and the water between them is the defining experience. Maho Beach is one of the Caribbean's most extraordinary water settings: a crescent of crystal sand directly beneath the approach path of Princess Juliana International Airport. Simpson Bay Lagoon is the largest lagoon in the northeastern Caribbean. Orient Bay, on the French side, is a reef-protected crescent of crystal turquoise water. Grand Case is the island's culinary and carnival capital, a single waterfront street of Creole restaurants and Afro-Caribbean rhythm.

Sint Maarten/Saint Martin is the smallest island in the world shared by two sovereign states — 37 square kilometres divided between the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Sint Maarten) in the south and the French Republic (Saint Martin) in the north. The island was originally inhabited by the Arawak people before European contact. It was divided between France and the Netherlands by the Treaty of Concordia in 1648 — a division that has remained, with minor adjustments, for nearly 400 years.
