The Taíno, the Africans & the Soul of Bomba

Before the Spanish arrived in 1493, Puerto Rico — then called Boriquén — was home to the Taíno people, an Arawakan civilisation that had inhabited the island for centuries. The Taíno were skilled farmers, navigators, and artists whose language gave the world words like hammock, barbecue, canoe, and hurricane. Within decades of Spanish contact, smallpox, forced labour, and warfare had devastated the Taíno population — but their genetic heritage, spiritual traditions, and cultural memory survive in Puerto Rican identity to this day. The word Boricua — the name Puerto Ricans call themselves — derives from the Taíno name for the island.

The enslaved Africans brought to Puerto Rico came primarily from West and Central Africa — Wolof, Mandinka, Yoruba, Igbo, and Kongolese peoples whose cultural traditions formed the foundation of Afro-Puerto Rican identity. In Loíza — designated a municipality in 1692 — the African heritage is most visible and most alive. The Santiago Apóstol Festival in Loíza, held every July, is one of the oldest and most extraordinary African-heritage festivals in the Americas — a convergence of Catholic observance and West African spiritual tradition expressed through vejigante masks, bomba drumming, and community procession.

Bomba itself — the music and dance form where the drummer follows the dancer rather than the other way around — is one of the most distinctive musical traditions in the Caribbean, a direct preservation of West African performance culture that survived slavery and colonial suppression to become the living heart of Afro-Puerto Rican identity.
