Departure
Somalia is one of the most misunderstood countries in Africa — and one of the most extraordinary. Long before the world knew it for conflict, Somalia was the ancient Land of Punt, the source of frankincense and myrrh, a maritime trading empire that connected East Africa to Arabia, Persia, and India. Mogadishu was one of the great cities of the medieval world — a cosmopolitan port that Ibn Battuta described as one of the finest cities he had ever seen.
This 7-day safari takes you into the heart of Somali heritage — through the ancient streets of Mogadishu's Hamarweyne old city, north to Somaliland and the extraordinary Laas Geel rock art site, and along the Indian Ocean coast. Laas Geel contains some of the best-preserved prehistoric rock art in Africa — paintings of cattle, humans, and animals dating back 5,000 years, in extraordinary condition. This is Somalia for those who understand that the greatest stories are the ones the world hasn't told yet.
Laas Geel is one of Africa's most significant archaeological sites — a series of rock shelters near Hargeisa in Somaliland containing prehistoric paintings of extraordinary quality and preservation. Discovered by a French archaeological team in 2002, the paintings date back between 5,000 and 11,000 years and depict cattle, humans, and animals in vivid ochre, red, and white. They are among the finest examples of prehistoric rock art on the continent.
Mogadishu's Hamarweyne district is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in East Africa. Its ancient mosques, Arab-influenced architecture, and Benadiri cultural heritage represent a civilisation that flourished for over a thousand years. The Benadiri people — the original inhabitants of the Mogadishu coast — produced one of the most distinctive cultures in the Horn of Africa, blending Somali, Arab, Persian, and Indian influences into a unique coastal civilisation.
