Santiago is the soul of Cape Verde — the largest island, home to the capital Praia, and the beating heart of Kriolu culture. It was here that the first Portuguese settlement in sub-Saharan Africa was established in 1462, and it was here that the Cape Verdean identity — born from African and European encounter — took root. The old town of Cidade Velha is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the oldest European colonial settlement in the tropics.
Fogo Island is dominated by Pico do Fogo — Cape Verde's active volcano, rising 2,829 metres from the Atlantic. The caldera contains a village — Cha das Caldeiras — where families have lived inside the volcano for generations, growing wine and coffee in the volcanic soil. Trekking to the summit is one of the Atlantic's great adventure experiences.
Santo Antão is the most dramatic hiking island in the Atlantic — deep ribeiras (valleys) carved by ancient lava flows, terraced agriculture clinging to near-vertical cliffs, and hiking trails that rank among the finest in Africa.
