About this experience

Sierra Leone is one of West Africa's most underrated destinations — a country of extraordinary natural beauty, deep historical significance, and some of the warmest people on the continent. Freetown, the capital, sits on a dramatic Atlantic peninsula flanked by mountains and beaches, and carries within it one of the most complex and moving histories in the African diaspora.

This 7-day safari takes you to Bunce Island — one of the most significant British slave trade sites in the world, from which thousands of Sierra Leoneans were shipped to the rice plantations of South Carolina and Georgia. You will visit Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to over 100 rescued Chimpanzees. You will walk the Freetown Peninsula beaches. And you will encounter the extraordinary Krio culture — the descendants of freed slaves who returned to West Africa and built one of the continent's most unique communities.

Freetown · Bunce Island · Temne · Mende · Krio Heritage

The Krio people of Sierra Leone are the descendants of freed slaves — from Nova Scotia, Jamaica, and directly from slave ships intercepted by the British Navy — who were resettled in Freetown from 1787 onwards. Their language, Krio, is a creole that blends English with Yoruba, Temne, Mende, and other West African languages. Their culture is a living bridge between Africa and the diaspora.

The Temne are Sierra Leone's largest ethnic group — farmers, traders, and warriors whose territory stretches across the north of the country. The Mende of the south are known for their Poro and Sande secret societies, their extraordinary wooden masks, and their role in the Amistad slave ship rebellion of 1839 — one of the most famous acts of resistance in the history of the Atlantic slave trade.
