The Forbidden City — built between 1406 and 1420 AD under the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty — is the world's largest palace complex: 980 buildings, 8,886 rooms, and 72 hectares of vermilion walls and golden rooftops that housed 24 emperors across six centuries. According to Chinese cosmology, the Forbidden City was the literal centre of the universe — the axis around which heaven and earth were organised, the point from which the Son of Heaven governed all under heaven.
