This 9-day safari takes you deep into Loango — a park that protects over 1,550 square kilometres of pristine coastal rainforest, lagoons, savannas, and Atlantic beach. The surfing hippos of Loango are world-famous — hippos that have adapted to riding the Atlantic surf, a behaviour found nowhere else on earth. Combined with gorilla encounters, forest elephant beach walks, and extraordinary birdlife, Loango is one of the most bucket-list wildlife experiences in Africa.
Loango National Park sits on Gabon's Atlantic coast, where the Congo Basin rainforest meets the sea. The park is extraordinary for its diversity of habitats — beach, lagoon, savanna, and dense equatorial forest — all within a single protected area. This mosaic of habitats supports an astonishing concentration of wildlife: forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, Chimpanzees, hippos, buffalos, leopards, and over 400 bird species.
The surfing hippos of Loango are one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife phenomena — hippos that have learned to navigate the Atlantic surf, riding waves along the beach in a behaviour documented nowhere else in the world. Forest elephants walk the beach at dawn, gorillas forage at the forest edge, and humpback whales breach offshore between July and September.
