Departure
Benin is the birthplace of Voodoo — not the Hollywood caricature, but one of the world's oldest and most complex spiritual traditions, practised by millions across West Africa and the African diaspora. Ouidah is Voodoo's sacred capital, a city of temples, python shrines, and the most powerful spiritual energy in West Africa. The Route des Esclaves — the Slave Route — leads from Ouidah's slave market to the Door of No Return on the Atlantic shore, one of the most moving and historically significant sites in the world.
Ganvie is Africa's largest lake village, home to 30,000 people living entirely on stilts above Lake Nokoué — a community that built its entire civilisation on water to escape the slave traders who could not cross the lake. This 7-day journey through Benin's Voodoo Coast is one of the most culturally profound experiences in West Africa. Verified local Ambassadors guide every step with deep respect for all traditions.
Benin — the former Kingdom of Dahomey — was one of the most powerful states in West Africa for three centuries. It was also one of the primary sources of enslaved Africans transported to the Americas, with over a million people passing through Ouidah's slave port. Today, Benin has reclaimed this history with extraordinary dignity, creating the Route des Esclaves as a memorial and a statement of survival. The Voodoo religion that enslaved Africans carried with them became Haitian Vodou, Brazilian Candomblé, and Cuban Santería — living proof of African cultural resilience.
