About This Expedition

This 10-day Bora Bora circuit is built around the world's most celebrated lagoon — a turquoise ring of water so clear that blacktip reef sharks and stingrays are visible from the surface. Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this extraordinary island, from B&B pensions in Vaitape to 5-star overwater bungalows suspended above the lagoon. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Bora Bora — called Pora Pora (first born) by the Mā'ohi people — was one of the first islands created according to Polynesian creation mythology. The ancient marae (sacred stone platforms) that dot Bora Bora's interior jungle represent a pre-Christian religious system as complex and sophisticated as any in the ancient world. The American military presence during WWII (1942–1946) left behind an entire road system, a concrete airstrip, and 130mm coastal defence guns still rusting in the jungle.

The Mā'ohi People · First Born Island & the Sacred Lagoon

Bora Bora — called Pora Pora (first born) by the Mā'ohi people — was one of the first islands created according to Polynesian creation mythology, rising from the ocean when the god Ta'aroa shook the earth. The ancient marae (sacred stone platforms) that dot Bora Bora's interior jungle represent a pre-Christian religious system as complex and sophisticated as any in the ancient world, with hierarchies of gods (atua), ancestral spirits ('oromatua), and priestly intermediaries (tahu'a) governing every aspect of life from fishing to warfare to childbirth.

The American military presence in Bora Bora during WWII (1942–1946) left behind an entire road system, a concrete airstrip, and 130mm coastal defence guns still rusting in the jungle — a reminder that even paradise was militarised in the 20th century. Today Bora Bora is the world's most recognised overwater bungalow destination, a concept pioneered here in 1960 by the Hotel Bora Bora, which suspended its first bungalows over the lagoon on stilts.
